Secular Student Alliance @ Sacramento State University

We have some big announcements for this semester:

– Our new officers are Dan Pemberton (President), Connor Paxton (Vice President), Virginia McCormick (Secretary), and Lara Kaapuni (Treasurer)

– Starting February 7, our weekly meetings will be 12-1pm (room will be announced very soon)

– We are hosting a talk by Dan Barker on Saturday April 6 at 2pm.

– The Secular Student Alliance Annual Conference is June 21-23, and everyone should go. The club is applying for DOC Funding and SSA Financial Aid as well as doing fundraising to send all attendees. Get on the mailing list to stay in the loop.

– And biggest of all, the Atheist Student Organization at Sac State will henceforth be titles the Secular Student Alliance at Sac State. We have become a branded affiliate of the national SSA organization. This was discussed at our pre-planning meeting as well as the first meeting of the semester. One of our goals is to allow all prospective members to feel safe and welcome, whether they identify as atheist, agnostic, freethinker, or just a very general non-religious; and, we believe the billing of “ASO” was a unnecessary distraction and impediment toward that goal. We also hope that the club may grow into an serious prospect for CSUS students to build resume-ready leadership skills and volunteer opportunities. Many members may hesitate to put the word “atheist” in their resumes; that is anti-thetical and counterproductive to a club who desires to offer career benefits for prospective members. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to raise them.
